GPTool is a simple way to organise your ChatGPT projects when you have a lot of them, want to group them by something like client, or your project setup has become a bit more complex than the ChatGPT sidebar handles well.
It sits on top of ChatGPT Projects as a local organisation layer. It helps you group and find projects faster, but it does not change the projects themselves inside ChatGPT.
The two top buttons
The two left-most buttons in the top bar switch what you are looking at.
- The GPTool smiley-folder button shows your GPTool view: your local folders, your assignments, and the organisation layer you created.
- The ChatGPT/OpenAI button shows ChatGPT’s own project list exactly as ChatGPT presents it.
That second view is mainly there for convenience. You can switch over to check the original ChatGPT listing, compare it with your GPTool setup, and confirm things are where you expect them to be.
If you are ever unsure which layer you are in, look for the GPTool smiley-folder icon. That is the clearest sign that you are looking at GPTool’s own organisation layer rather than ChatGPT’s built-in view.
Make your first folder
To create a GPTool folder, open the GPTool panel in Chrome and use the GPTool hamburger menu. That menu is where folder actions live.
Native folders vs GPTool folders
There are two folder ideas on screen, so this section should use two screenshots: one showing the native ChatGPT project icon, and one showing the GPTool folder icon.
- The native ChatGPT project icon belongs to ChatGPT.
- The GPTool folder icon belongs to GPTool.
The important cue is the GPTool smiley-folder icon. When you see that icon, you are looking at the GPTool organisation layer, not a built-in ChatGPT folder.
That distinction matters because GPTool is grouping projects for you locally rather than editing ChatGPT’s own structure.
What rename actually renames
Actions like Rename apply to GPTool folders, not to ChatGPT projects.
If you rename a folder in GPTool, you are only renaming the local folder label you created in GPTool. The projects inside it keep their original names in ChatGPT.
What GPTool organises today
Right now GPTool organises projects, not files or individual chats.
That is deliberate: projects are the useful top-level unit in ChatGPT today. Files do not have the same clear organisation model yet, so GPTool stays focused on project-level sorting, grouping, and finding for now.
